In the construction and agricultural industries, hydraulic equipment is required for various functions, including lifting, digging, and moving heavy materials. This equipment is often exposed to fluctuating temperatures, various chemicals, moisture, and other harsh conditions. Due to these intense demands, the construction and agriculture industries rely on durable, long-lasting seals to ensure equipment efficacy.

Construction and Agriculture Industry

The construction and agriculture industries rely on rubber parts to protect against leakage, resist the intrusion of chemicals, and seal various openings from moisture, contaminants, and dust. Agricultural equipment, in particular, comes into frequent contact with both organic and chemical substances that have the potential to impair the proper functioning of the machinery.

To prevent any form of contamination in construction and agriculture equipment, proper sealing solutions are imperative. Industrial rubber seals are designed to withstand continual exposure to harsh substances and environments. Manufacturers typically use a variety of these seals within tools and equipment intended for industrial agriculture applications such as:

  • Packaging
  • Harvesting
  • Post-harvest handling
  • Water management
  • Transportation
  • Pest management
  • Fertilization
  • Crop cultivation

Types of Sealing Solutions

There is a wide range of sealing solutions available for use in different construction and agriculture applications. These include:

Rotary Lip Seals

For machinery with many moving parts, rotary lip seals play an essential role in the efficiency and efficacy of the equipment. Also known as oil seals, rotary lip seals are flexible and serve to protect the areas of machinery where stationary and moving parts interact. Rotary lip seals keep dirt, dust, and other contaminants out of the equipment while simultaneously preventing lubricant from escaping. This improves the longevity of the machinery, enabling precision components and rotating shafts to continue functioning effectively even after long term use in demanding applications.

At MSP Seals, our oil seals are highly durable, functioning well in extreme construction and agriculture working environments. These seals also feature low friction properties, which drastically improves their longevity within machinery that has many moving parts.

Hydraulic & Pneumatic Rubber Seals

Hydraulic and pneumatic seals play similar roles in machinery, as both of them reciprocate the motion that is often part of hydraulic and pneumatic processes. However, these two types of sealing solutions are better suited for slightly different applications. Hydraulic seals are ideal for use in high-pressure applications, such as hydraulic cylinders. Pneumatic seals, on the other hand, are designed for lower pressure applications. Hydraulic seals also effectively separate fluids, whereas pneumatic seals are more effective at separating gases.

Hydraulic and pneumatic seals are available in a range of materials, including silicone, PTFE, carbon, ceramic, urethane, and other elastomers such as NBR, FKM, EPDM and more. There are also an array of hydraulic and pneumatic seal designs, making it possible to meet the needs of many different applications. Options for hydraulic and pneumatic seals include rod wipers, V-packings, back-up rings, and piston seals.

several sealing rings of different sizes

O-rings feature the ability to seal under pressure in any direction, making them an optimal choice for a wide array of applications. These seals are designed to sit between two pieces of hardware within machinery. They prevent fluid and air from entering and protect the equipment by filling the extra space between parts.

High pressures strengthen the seal by forcing the O-ring to constrict around the hardware. The O-ring is then able to return to its original shape after the pressure is lifted. Since these seals can maintain their shape after repeated shifts between high and low pressure, they are ideal for use in both static and dynamic pressure applications. They also perform well in a range of different temperatures.

O-rings offer several benefits outside their flexibility and durability. These seals are very straightforward to install, as they don’t require any twisting or tightening. This also means that they are easy to maintain, and are unlikely to damage the hardware during installation. O-ring failures are gradual and easy to spot, thus significantly reducing the risk of sudden equipment malfunctions. At MSP, our O-rings are available in a range of materials, allowing us to customize a solution based on your unique application.

Custom Molded Seals

For applications with highly precise needs, custom molded seals are often the optimal choice. This option makes it possible to choose the materials, sizes, and designs that offer the highest levels of durability and efficacy even in challenging environments.
